Copyright is a property right, which means that the owner can sell, transfer or grant a licence to another person or body in much the same way as an owner of land can sell or lease his/her property. Where land is sometimes referred to as ‘real’ property, copyrights are called ‘intellectual property’ rights. The playwright has the right to be identified as the creator of the work, and the right to veto any distortion of the work that would prejudice his or her reputation. No script changes should be made without the writer’s permission.
